beginner drifting. (supra)
I'm getting a nice chunk of change back from taxes and looking to start a project.
Any suggestions for a low cost drift car?
I'm looking at purchasing a 1986.5 supra. (I would eventually swap/rebuild the motor.) Does anyone own an mkIII supra and be willing to tell me pros and cons of this car?
Thanks.

get ready to replace headgaskets. often. doesn't matter what you do, you'll blow them. we built my friend's 7M with ARP studs and HKS metal headgasket and the shit still blew...twice.
they slide ok though. or at least with 400hp they do, never tried it in a close to stock one.

Hey I'm an ex-Supra owner. Both of mine were MKIV's, hence my name. The Supra's are great vehicles but I wouldn't put them in the Drift category. I wasn't ever a MKIII fan. I ran with a bunch of those guys but just thought it was to much work to put into a car that wasn't designed that well. And like Shawn said, They are TANKS.
My opinion would be get an old Mazda RWD 929 and put a rotary in it. Or just start simple and get a 240sx (S13) and put a suspension on it and go from there. I guess it just depends on what you've got to spend. If you only have $3k then I'd get a 240 and do the suspension. If you have $5k start the 929 project.
Give us more specifics on what you're wanting to do other than just have a Supra and drift. We already gave a relatively bad feedback on the Supra. So lets go in a different direction.

My FOERST slider was a MK3, the best thing you can do to that car is a 1j cause that 7m motor, like Panda said, will just keep blowing head gaskets. I wouldn't buy one again, but in all honesty its your money. The car can be a great starter car cause it was so damn heavy. You will learn a lot about weight transferring and throttle control. But if you break down make sure you got about 4 other people to help you push it. The after market is slim to none, well at least back in the day there was none. It can be made into a nice car, but it will not be cheap.

Thats what they all say.
Back on a serious note. As a previous owner of both an MK3 supra and an MK2 Supra, Do Not get an MK3 to drift. They are tanks, and they break. And they Suck to work on.
An Mk2 can be had for cheaper (usually), and aren't as prone to breaking because they are N/A, but still have plent of power/torque to get you started in drifting. They are also plentiful in junkyards generally.
