I agree with many of your points quazar (sorry I don't know your real name) and I must apologise if I didn't convay my thoughts on the subject more clearly.
I respect that DG Trials is putting on this event, and I certainly didn't intend to "bash" that fact. I was only trying to explain the perceptions and some cost comparisons based on some figures I had on hand. I have considered the travling costs of those events mentioned, which is why I will also not be in Florida for the $75 event, because $150 in gas is no deal. I was hoping to show them, not as alternatives, but benchmarks of the industry as I see it, which added evidence to my point that this is a "premium" event, as you yourself said. Drifting in the Metro area will cost more, however I respectfully dissagree that this will further the sport of drifting more than a cheaper event in a slightly less ideal location. We regularly have people drive 3-4 hours to come to our events, many from the southern side of ATL, so I'd venture to say that 95% of these people would drive further, especially for less money. Not to mention the cost savings for DG Trials itself. Hell, you already have to drive 30 min. to get anywhere in ATL, what's 45min - 1 hour for some $40 drifting? Just my thoughts...
Regardless, I think this will be a cool event and it probably will not happen again afterwards unless some things change in the future. Good luck and take lots of pictures.

i am an enthusiast before event organizer.
DGTrials has not made money to even pay its staff..... we are all volunteers. However the money we generate at our events are directly pumped into the production of other events.
we would much rather charge people a lower cost but sometimes in certain areas.. its just not in the cards.
where are these $40 events within an hour from Atlanta?
i'd certainly would have gone to those had i known about them...
i'm sure many other members/associations on here have done research about holding events and can agree with alot of the facts... many of us are friends with the people from DM, Batlground, Drift411 and SEDA..
as far as all our combined research has found.. there hasn't been a 'feasible' low cost event area in Atlanta as of yet. i'm not saying there aren't any in the works..
but like i said.. there are many factors to the costs of an event.. and its not just the venue cost and insurance cost.
every region that DG has to run events has to own their own equipment to help insure that an event runs smoothly. you can get away with 10-15 cones for 1 or 2 turns.. but when you want a course that will not only help driver learning and provide a challenge to those who already have skills.. you're going to need a bigger course.
i mean we've accepted long ago that we're not going to make big bucks from throwing events. DG has as best come close to 'breaking' even at even the cheapest of venues. DG has never made it big from throwing events, DG is primarily focused on helping the growth of the grassroots of drift.
high cost low cost.. it all depends on the area.. unfortunately.. atlanta is not low cost.. yet.

I have worked endlessly with more than 10 are venues since February on trying to get a "cheaper" location in a "slighty less ideal location". No one wants us!!! Us amateur drifters don't have a name that people trust. Emphasis on the word amatuer. When I stated how attendance to these type of amateur events might further the sport of drifting, I wasn't referring to pro events. Money takes care of venues that host pro drifting events. We obviusly, as amateurs, don't have that much $$. I was just making the point that if we do more events like this in the metro area, we then have a resume of sorts that includes venues that may provide references to other venues. This way we can say we have done it before...you can trust us to act appropriately. That's most of the problem that I have been running into. The venues want to know where we have done this before. I have been able to say, we've done it numerous times in many other states, but that doesn't seem to satisfy them.Drifting in the Metro area will cost more, however I respectfully dissagree that this will further the sport of drifting more than a cheaper event in a slightly less ideal location.
If you have so much knowledge and experience in setting up events, then I respectfully ask why you aren't offering help or why you haven't set up your own practice drifting event in Atlanta?
Because neither myself nor my associates live in Atlanta.Tracy wrote: If you have so much knowledge and experience in setting up events, then I respectfully ask why you aren't offering help or why you haven't set up your own practice drifting event in Atlanta?
As for offering help and setting up events, I'm currently talking with Jim Pantas at NASA-SE, Mike at SEDA, and just tonight, Brian from LookOut, about doing just that, helping out to get some events up and running. We should have some joint events running in Greenville next semester with NASA, and hopefully others involved as well.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I started this reply after I read a post basically saying anyone who choses to not drift in ATL is a pussy, and was mearly explaining another side. I would have happily walked away with my origional comment last week of "I don't have $90 to spend" had I not read this.
In fairness to you Tracy, Brian and I talked tonight about the things you both went through over the last year, and I greatly respect your efforts involved. I still stand by my origional statment though, that no matter what you do, a club of 18-25 year olds, trying to rent a lot in order to engage in purposefull, high speed stunts, is going to run into problems. AutoX clubs struggle constantly to get lots, and as I said before, it's an established form of motorsports.
Personally I think that the only way to accomplish what you are looking for is to package autoX and drift practice events toghether, possible with Gymkhana style races as well. I also think that inter-club colaborations are a must. I also understand that 95-100% of drift organizations do not posses the resources to pull off such an event. Since we are school suported, have a budget, and have been hosting autoX events for over 40 years, I have been trying to get some joint events together with the clubs stated above so that we can help out. Believe me, nothing would please me more than to use our club to further the sport.
To be honest with you, I truly hope that you are correct, and that this event can be use it to attain more lots. You know more about the Atlanta area than myself, and I hope we can see some more venues open up as a result. I'm mearly sharing my opinions on the subject, and they should be taken as such.
Rob

I hear ya:)
I know you don't know me, but me saying the pussy thing was just meant to get people to look at the thread. I didn't really mean it the way it cam out, I guess. I just have been trying really hard to get things going in Atlanta and now there is finally something here and I just don't want it to be a waste.
I don't think that it matters who you talk to about getting together with and doing an Atlanta event (I have talked to the same people as you, as you already mentioned). I don't think that any of these people that you mentioned has more credibility than the next as far as locking down a venue (and that is not talking shit). I have the money and the insurance for a "cheaper" location but it's not that easy...it's not only about the $$$. I think that if the people you were speaking of could find a venue, they would have had an Atlanta event already . I spend every day talking to people about renting their "less desireable" venues. I think that what had to be done was done by DG. They took a chance, set up an event and it is a bit pricy, but Turner is expensive and they require a ton of insurance. They are the only place that would even think about having us. I also talked to hundreds of people via e-mail (when I was trying to see if there was interest in Feb. before I spent $$ on a location) that said they would be willing to spend up to $100 to participate in an Atlanta event...where are they now?
I have also spoken with many autoX organizations (SCCA and United BMW,etc.) and they offer no help and don't seem interested in sharing anything.
I do wish you luck, though, in you endeavors. I just ant peple to come out and support the sport that I have a lot of passion for. I thought a lot of others shared the same passion...Ijust couldn't tell by the sign up sheet.

Hi... I'm Andy... and I'm late on this thread, lol.
I guess I'll start by saying that I don't think $90 is expensive for a drift event. In fact... I have only entered two events that have been under $100, and they were both DG events. I'm not saying that $90 isn't a chunk of change... I'm just saying in relation to the cost of drift events across the board... $90 is a great price.
Granted... other events, such as autocrosses will run less expensive, but with than comes fewer runs and less seat time (not to mention corner work). I have yet to get less than 12 runs at a DG event - which is about as much bang for your buck as you can get.
When you factor in travel expenses for out-of-state events... the price tag for the complete package skyrockets. Hotels usually run $80/night... and trips with more than an 8 hour drive require a two-night stay (trying to make the drive back after a full day of seat time is suicide). Gas alone runs about $100, bumping a weekend trip to $260... entry fee on top - you're looking at $360 (ish), not including eating costs, and tyres.
I'm so stoked at the opportunity to drift on my home turf... without all the extra cost & hassle of a road trip, that I'm ready to enter myself twice. I'll still come out ahead from what I normally drop for an event.
Do I think DG is trying to get over on us? Absolutely not. Do I think DG is doing the best they can to get things going - and give us the best price they can? Most definitely. The quote I heard for Turner lot rental was $6K for the day if you're doing one event... $5K if you're planning more than one. That's just the fee to rent the lot - not including insurance costs. I heard Road Atlanta costs $10K just to shut the track down, not including rental... which would relinquish it as the most inconceivable venue yet.
I do find it a bit disheartening, how so many people in the Atlanta area were interested in getting events going... and now there's a roster half filled two days before the event. I totally understand that $90 is a lot of money... and I totally understand that a lot of people's cars aren't running up to speed enough to slide safely. My sentiment is not directed towards anyone in particular. I have heard people say "I'm not good enough to enter"... "I'm just going to watch instead"... that's where my frustration lies. Nobody is expecting everyone to roll off the line to be a pro... everyone has to start somewhere, and grassroots events are the place to do it.
Atlanta has an amazing opportunity here to get more local events in motion. I want to see events here in the city more than anyone. All it takes is support from the community. I know we have the community - now all we need is a little support. I hope that driver list fills up at latest on Saturday morning.
This is going to be a great event... and I thank DGTrials for putting it in motion, despite what it may cost them in the end.

ack, in the thread late too, finals 2 weeks for classes so its a bit hectic.
anyways, coming from Cali (both nor and socal) the events over there are way to expensive for riding around on a parkinglot or a half of oval turn on the speedway, FOERST was 100, then 150, then i think now its around 200 bucks. Here its really cheap cause its just starting to get big in the east coast. The DriftDay events here in Florida are fuckin cheap as fuck! If I had the time and car properly setup were i can enjoy a run at a track I would have gone to both of them here.
ohwel, guess am not a drifta anymore =(

Drifting in FL is always going to be cheaper because everything in Fl is cheaper. I know because I moved away from FL when I was 18. Just as an example, I rented a 5 bedroom house with a pool and a slide for $300/month!!! I now have a triplex that I rent for $900/month for a 1 bedroom (728 sqft.). The cost is relevant to location. When we rent the track in FL, we are probably paying dudes rent for he entire month. All I'm asking is that we keep in perspective what is happening here in Atlanta.djdorifto wrote: The DriftDay events here in Florida are fuckin cheap as fuck!
