Let's see the examples of motion and panning shots with a Canon's 17-55 f/3.5-5.6 at a drift event! I'm pretty sure Nikon's kits are better quality but we can see them too...with EXIF intact.

I shot an ad that was in at least 3 million magazine issues last year...with a Canon kit lens, lol! Obviously it was static. I have done some "decent" rolling shots as well but I would never attempt a pan, especially in a lower light situation like an overcast day.

Practice or not, a drift event is a business. Hopefully operated professionally and even though the promoter should be released from all liability there should not be inexperienced or amateur people on the track: whether it be drivers, photographers, or crew unless they are accompanied next to someone who has many events under their belt along with a good reason to be there.

The point of media being at an event is to promote the event. You would expect those with the ability and experience to be placed ahead of the others. Does a "kit lens" or even a point & shoot automatically mean someone is inexperienced though? No and anyone that knows me knows I'm a strong supporter of a point & shoots capabilities. However I'm not a supporter of inexperienced people being a liability. You practice and learn from the sidelines or by the side of someone with experience. Allowing people on the course without a spotter is irresponsible.

Well I am going to post my photos in a bit but being linked to this thread and to this forum from some of the guys running and driving in the event I have to reply...

I think Chang used the wrong lingo. I don't personally care if you use the kit lens. If you get results you get results and good for you. As Jason said I would like to see some shots from them as he did. Panning with them would be difficult and to top it off the cars are gonna be TINY!

With that being said I believe I was the ONLY person there with a damn spotter. Someone is watching the cars while my ass was taking photos of the cars. I paid to get him in and I made it worth his while. I was told before this event and others that NO ONE would be allowed without a spotter. I am not going to throw a big cry baby spell but that rule should be enforced for the photographers, drivers, event promoters and the venue. Blake wasn't going to let me get hit. If I do get hit the driver feels like shit, the venue shuts it down and shit hits the fan.

A new photographer and something that is not experienced is too focused on trying to get the picture. Doesn't realize items going on around him. This is something that comes with practice and experience.

To note, and you can view my new thread in a minute, some of my best shots came from OUTSIDE the track... Learn to shoot everywhere. Just getting out in the middle and hanging out and shooting away is really just taking away from someone else that could really use the better angles and being closer to the action.

Now I personally think someone that is there to shoot FOR a driver and was/is paid by that driver should be allowed if worked out beforehand to get the shots from the middle or wherever else to shoot that is safe. "Getting out on track" should be something earned. Not something that is handed to you because you came with a dSLR.

The number one issue here is SAFETY in the end. A spotter was supposedly required and when I FOERST got there I was told 1 photog PER tent. Well Soon there were 2-4 at each and no spotters. All were just shooting away...

Next time hopefully this will get worked out and we can unruffle the feathers. Chang is an exceptional photog and you can shun him and make fun of him or whatever but you are just missing out on his work :)

i don't get it...

this was a practice event.. not a competition..

if it weren't for the new photographers learning to shoot at these events.. we wouldn't have professional photographers shooting at the big events.

i barely have a camera and i have media credentials every where.. young rich and famous.. with media credentials hangin' out the anus.

bah.. whatever..

*ego* i am good friends with Antonio */ego*

LOL.
