Upgrade!
I was looking through the photos I have of the work I've been doing on my TI since the motor popped this February. There's not a ton, but I figured I'd post what I've got. I apologize in advance for any crappy (iPhone) photos.
So obviously, the motor's pretty screwed up. Compression runs from from to back: 75 psi, 5 psi, 0 psi, and 50 psi. Not good. I know the HG is toast, cause there was oil in the coolant. Haven't gotten the head off to check any other potential damage.
THE PLAN:
1.) Acquire M3 swap
2.) ?
3.) Drift
Anyway, here it was in my garage after the FOERST night of work.
Mike and I worked on it some and tried to pull the motor, but the trans uses all Torx bolts and while I have Torx sockets, I don't have external Torx sockets. We also couldn't get the drive shaft disconnected from the differential. I was discouraged enough to just drop it and leave it sitting for about 2 weeks.
Yesterday, I got a wild hair and decided to try a different approach. I went out to Lowe's and bought a pipe wrench, and detached the front half of the drive shaft from the rear half. At that point, I could remove the motor mounts and do this:
And that's where I am after last night. I'm thinking tonight, I'm gonna try and get the head off and see what other (if any) damage has been done.

Re: Upgrade!
Why do you suggest doing that over swapping in an M3 motor?

Because it makes the most sense.
Re: Upgrade!
You go from a 318ti (outdated rear end, rear suspension, etc) to having a BMW E36 that is an M-car from the factory.PmartyX wrote:collink wrote:Why do you suggest doing that over swapping in an M3 motor?

This includes that the rear suspension is updated to the E36 plus the subframe sections and mounts are reinforced from the factory. Better rear end, better brakes, and it's all from the factory. Built from the factory.
You might save some weight with a 318ti... but that's about it.
I'm being honest and nice here.... so take it while you can.

Re: Upgrade!
I guess the fact that I want to do something more unique isn't a good enough argument?

Re: Upgrade!
unique = expensive
don't be a jackass
also when you pulled the motor out there is no reason to have it at that much of an angle or that high off the ground. unless you were trying to help us out by having it fall on your head

Re: Upgrade!
pain in the ass but unique or simple and reliable. same with any "unique" drift build.

Re: Upgrade!
