So what's up with all of the pussys that say they can drift
I always hear all of these people in Atlanta talking about how they can drift soooooooooooo good. As far as I know there are only like 20 people signed up for Turner on Sat. I heard a lot of people saying that it's too expensive. Well if you think about it, it's expensive right now because this is the FOERST practice event ever in Atlanta. We have to gain the trust of the local venues and then maybe we can attain cheaper prices. Right now they think that we are a bunch of kids doing stupid stuff in parking lots....they don't understand yet. We all need to do our part to help legitimize the sport. If we refuse to show our faces at these local events, the sactioning bodies will be forced to hold these type of events for amatuers in states where people show an interest (and taveling to another state to drift legally as a lot more expensive than $95). Believe me when I say, the peple at DGtrials are not trying to rip you off with the price of driving in this event. I know them very well and they are going to lose money on this event....even if all 40 slots were taken, they wokuld still lose a tremendous amount of money. They are willing to do this for the growth of the sport!! I heard some people say "It's too expensive, I'll just keep it on the street". I understand the reasoning behind this because I have *cough cough* drifted in places that I was not supposed to, but I am still going to do my damnest to make it to any local amatuer event held. I will take a hit in the wallet for my passion of the sport. Do you think it was always easy for SCCA. I'm sure they had to go through their own feats to gain respect. I mean, I would like for Dan, and maybe even myself, to someday be able to compete in Formula D. I just don't know how we will gain the experience if there is no legal place to practice.
So, in conclusion, get your asses out to Turner on Sat. or I will come and hunt each and every one of you down and then I will slowly kill you!!! and it will not be fun for you.

I really don't agree with you on price. Let's look at some examples...
DG PRACTICE event, not even a competition, $90
Florida Competition Event with $5000 in prizes, $75
Typical US Drift Comp with prizes, $100
D1 Event, $150
NASA Drift-X Practice event in Gville- $40
LookOut Drift Practices in VA- $40
Now let's do math. 40x$90 (Generous because I certainly don't think they'll get 40) =$3600 On top of the $5 their charging for spectators.
You can rent CMP with track insurance, medics, and corner workers for $3600.
Typical event insurance for something like this averages $1200. This tells me one of two things. Either DG Trials is getting raped on insurance, or they're paying out the ass for Turner field. I would like to think that DG trials was smart enough to organize some sort of cost sharing plan with the SCCA, since they're running a joint event. Example: US Drift ran a joint event at Lowes with a Legends organizer, they shared the cost and charges $0 for admission. They either need to shop for better insurance, or move to a less expensive location. I'm not about to pay a premium for location durring a practice event.
So lets break this down. Do I think DG Trials will lose money on this event, yes I do. I think they purposly set their prices high to try to minimize the loss. Do I think they'll lose money "out the ass" even with 40 races, the answer is NO. Personally I would have set the price lower, and encuraged the max 40 races becuase I think that would have done more for the sport than the $90 price tag, but then again, that's just my opinion. I certainly don't think their "ripping people off", but when you charge a premium, expect to hear about it. (Adobe Premier, Medicine, high end performance parts, etc)
Now with that said, I certianly see how people could take issue with the price involved, as I myself did. Given the alternatives present, people attending this event are paying a premium for convenience. Calling them out for their choice is like calling out someone for buying a $4 hot dog at the track, and then complaining about how expensive it is. Buy all the hot dogs you want, they aren't getting cheaper....
How is us racing more going to improve perception when the SCCA, one of the most respected organizations autocrossing, is probably going to lose Turner Field as a venue. Guess what, autoX still struggles to get locations, and it's 40 years old. Drifting isn't going to change any time soon. The only thing that will make it cheaper is better planning, different locations, and cutting costs.
I'm sorry now if I've miss read any of this data, but this is my analasys on the subject given my two years of organizing autoX and track enets, and the research that's entailed. If you have the money and want to go out, more power to you. I wish I was ball'n like that, but I'm broke.

That was pleasant. LOL I think the price is more than fair. My problem is that I have one project car that isn't running and another that has a misfire issue when driven hard. In other words I got no drift car right now. I am however about to try and build a permanent drift car for 05'. More on that later.Tracy wrote:I always hear all of these people in Atlanta talking about how they can drift soooooooooooo good okeeye: . That's really my point. $2,000 is way to much money to spend on this place when CMP goes for $1800 durring off season. I would hope they would be splitting the cost of the lot with the SCCA though.darkducati wrote:Last I heard turner field lots go for @ $2k per day. To give you an idea on insurance rates,
NASA spends $1200 per event with their national provider, which is a tad high, but they make up for it with their cheaper insurance rates on wheel to wheel and HPDE events.
Highlands has a national insurance company that charges an average of $400 per event. (This is very low)
Drift Day spends close to $2000 on insurance last I heard, which is way to high. This was also early in the year, so I would hope they've restructured since then.
I would say that anything more than $1200 for an organization such as DG Trials would be too much, and they can shop around for better rates.
Most tracks charge $1200-1600 for insurance coverage of $2 million for lapping days. Drift practice sessions fall under autoX conditions, and should carry similar insurance rates. Tandum is another story.

depends on who's calling them i guess, i believe they quoted tracy something like $5k for the day when she called to see about doing an event.
That's insane!!! The only thing I can think of is they are trying to reduce or eleminate their events. SCCA has 120-150 racers per event, at $35 a person, that's $5020, plus insurance and such. That's pushing it. I'd venture to say they pay way under that quoted $5000 amount. Kinda makes $2k sound like a bargin huh?icantdrift wrote:darkducati wrote:Last I heard turner field lots go for @ $2k per day. In all seriousness, you can rent Road Atlanta for that much and drift D1 style.

well..
lets just say that.. what has been an actual 'qoute from turner' is ALOT of money.. and well.. maybe we are stupid and crazy.. we are. LOL.
turner does want alot of money for their lot.. but thats because they know they can get ALOT for it. consider the fact that this is the 'FOERST' METRO drift event ANYWHERE on the east coast.. and by METRO.. its downtown.
we felt that atlanta needed an event.. and there was an open day left at turner for this season that opened up, they raped on price.. but we took it.. paid for it and so there it is. hey we're gonna end up eating it.. but atlanta really needing an event that is for the grassroots guys.. not all the 'pro and pro-am' drifters.
and as far as insurance goes... guys.. you don't understand that its not DGtrials that determines the insurance needed.. its the property owners that determine the amount of insurance needed.. and most underwriters charge about the same for insurance. we have to buy insurance amounts that are what the property demands.
$90.. its not too bad....
look at all those other events you just qouted.. yeah they are cheap.. but factor in gas (not so cheap) and food and what nots.. you're not that cheap anymore.. on top of that.. what is your time/value of money when you're driving SEVERAL hours to an event.
splitting the cost with SCCA?
thats a great idea.. but sometimes other people don't want to share.
SCCA is running an autox the same day and everything, however... it has nothing to do with DGtrials.. unfortunately.
well. i'm not pointing a gun to anyone's head to come out and drive. i'm just posting because its not that bad of a cost. its a nice lot in a great location and its going to be fun.
We're trying to promote the grassroots growth of drifting...... and the local drifting scenes. We're gonna lose out the ass for this.... I can't say we don't like this.. because I think its gonna be a good event and its going to put a fire under the asses of alot of local drifters to ask for more events (not just those sanctioned by DG)!

BTW.. RoadA costs alot and their insurance is high.. and its ALOT of track for any small association to staff and control the drivers/crowd. which in turn would push up costs even more. Its alot of liability.
Ever wonder why track days at RoadA aren't cheaper than they are?
CMP is a nice place.. we've raced there before with SCCA IT events and one of the biggest 'outside' promoters of DG actually created the business plan for CMP.
CMP's no longer very cheap either. However if you can get a qoute from CMP for medics, track workers, and insurance for $3600. please PM me so that you can fax or we can meet up so i can get a copy. we strongly consider putting up an event there.
Gotta understand.. most properties are not friendly when it comes to things like 'drifting' and neither is insurance.

Oh yeah.. and remeber these drivers are jobless.. so if you can donate them a candy bar or something so they don't pass out of starvation in your car! LOL. j/k on the candy bar part.. but they are Starving-Racers.
