Car Audio for The Destroyerâ„¢.

Post by andysapp »

Because I am now spending between 1-3 hours a day in my truck, I am looking for a slight sound upgrade in the cab. Mainly because my speakers are totally blown and I can't take it anymore.

I don't know much about car audio stuff... what is decent... what won't cost a shit-ton. I'm not looking for anything crazy... perhaps a little more bass so I can headbang harder in traffic. I have the OE stereo... and I'm not opposed to changing it to something that'll play from my iPod/iPhone only. Fuck some CDs.

Can any of you dudes drop some knowledge on me?

Fwiw, I'm still rockin the same powered bazooka that I had way back in the red car. I think this is the 6th car it's been in over a decade that I'm aware of and it still kills.

Do you have the standard system or a BOSE system? With or without Onstar?

Andy.. there is a setup at Walmart which is a Pioneer radio that does WMA/MP3 with USB and AUX in.
It also comes with 4 speakers for $85 total.

The two front speakers will fit in your truck.. no problems. It is 6.5". You will need speaker wire adapters. So you will have two spare 6.5" speakers.

The rears at 4x6 and are in the rear doors and you will need speaker wire adapters as well.
You will need to pick up a set of those. I recommend something cheap as it is the rear and it doesn't really matter as much as it is for rear fill. 4x6's sound like shit anyways.. and will never sound good no matter what people say. Buy the cheapest that can handle about 100 watts RMS.

You will also need a dashkit for the radio, wire harness adapters, and antenna adapter.

I can install everything in about 1-2 hours. No biggie.

So here's what you do:

1. Buy the Walmart radio setup (4 speakers and radio $85)
2. Buy a set of cheapie 4x6 speakers ($50 max)
3. Buy a dash kit, wire harness, antenna adapter, speaker harnesses ($90-100).

Buy the Metra dash kit and the Metra harnesses as they are the best quality and click together perfect.

40-GM10 Antenna Adapter
99-2009 Dash Kit
72-4568 Speaker Harness (x2)
.. the wiring harness all depends on the factory radio you have and onstar.

I like the price of the stuff that Eugene posted.

If the budget allows, I did most of my research through crutchfield's website and then purchased product from ebay. It saved a lot.

Your truck should take this harness:

Metra VT-GMRC-01

It retains the factory Data Bus II and the warning chimes.

The wiring harness is a bit pricey.. but it's what it takes.

Shrug.

Well.. honestly.. I need to pull the radio and see what harness you have behind it. Your truck was during GM's transition years.

I ve got an Icelink Ipod Interface in my E46 and i dont want to miss it! The Problem is that original stereos dont give you a good sound even if you have better speakers :-( Its okay on the Bimmer and also on my Trailblazer, got the same stereo andy, bolt in some better speakers and it sounds much much better!

Eugene, I can pull the stereo and snap some photos if the harness if that would help. I need to get in there and remove the iPod interface adapter that Crackhead Jenkins broke when he ripped my iPod out of the truck.

It seems weird to me that iPod-only head units cost as much, if not more than cd or cassette units. Seems like way less parts/mechanicals. I guess a CD player isn't bad to have... but it just seems pointless since I won't use it.

Yeah.. I think you gotta put the truck in 1st.. and then unsnap the dash trim piece.. and the radio should either unbolt or unclip and slide out.
