you should see all of the reports from the baja 1000 from the 2007 race. several reports of armed hijacking and tons of people shaken down for cash by dirty cops. not to mention a helicopter crash that killed two including some drug lord's kid in the chopper, a team of armed men breaking into the morgue and stealing his body, lots of "booby traps" on the course like random trenches dug in the middle of the road, and a few fatal accidents on the highways in and out of baja due to the alarmingly high number of drunk locals traveling the roads. several prominent race teams have vowed never to return to baja after 30 something years of racing there.

i really can't imagine why terrorists would waste their time with something like the dakar rally though, but i guess anything they can disrupt they will.
