THE BEST OF driftMechaniks!

Post by charlie »

I find myself wondering a lot of times where some great post or photo was and the search... well... you know how that goes. We need a Greatest Hits collection. This can also be a good primer for noobs to our awesome forum, cuz we don't fuck around on this internet.

So to kick off BEST OF driftMechaniks, I nominate this photo by Shawn Watson.

Image

Why it's great: As if the photo itself wasn't beautiful enough, we get the delightful surprise of noticing (only after being notified by down_shift mind you) that Andy Sapp is indeed in the photo as well, and chasing through Tyler's jungle of smoke. Well played sirs. Bravo.

It doesn't have to be new by the way. If you remember and can find something worthy, post it!

Please note that if you nominate some bullshit, you will be subjected to much ridicule and embarrassment and I can not be held responsible for the repercussions and actions taken by the dM community to punish you, you stupid asshole.

I also nominate Andy's last avatar but I don't really have access to that. Andy... any way you can repost it?

awesome idea sir!

a few of my immediate contributions, along with a brief explanation...

Image
The Streets of Dunwoody Formula D qualifier was a very important event held during an unstable moment during American drifting history. Formula D was going into it's 3rd or so year and starting to implement a qualifying system, so pretty much everyone and their brother decided they'd be holding "official" Foruma D qualifiers. In our typical style, we made a mockery of the entire ordeal and put together this fun poster (inspired by an official FD poster, see below) which spread through the interwebs like wildfire. This poster got so famous so quickly that the nice gentlemen over at Formula D called Mr. Sapp a few days after it went live requesting for it to be pulled for various reasons. We laughed a lot, did that for a while, and it eventually found it's way back online.

(the original)

Image
We used to have weekly meets at Startime in Roswell and they were always quite amusing. Initial D contests, parking lot drift demos, and fun posing with the mini-golf Pirate ship, as seen in this photo, circa 2005.

Image

Image
The above two photos were from a particularly amusing night a number of years ago when Andy, BM, and myself were all bored and wandering through the D-Wood Walmart. Upon finding a sweet denim shirt, Andy deiced to buy it which randomly led to the idea to dress up ridiculously (mainly like truckers and Cuban Drug lords) and go out in public wearing said attire. We headed to this weird bar that a friend of ours worked at during the time, got some really weird stares, and then headed to a few locations for some sweet photos (but not without stopping by a gas station for some hella shady Bronson cigarettes as photo props). We also did a tag team effort on Andy's ink for the evening which came out quite nice.

Image
Andy won a trophy for "best 4-door under construction" at some weird local car show (with his BMW), and we all found that funny. I think Hooman got one for something totally opposite that day too, but I forget.

Image
It's hard to even begin to describe the awesomeness of the pocketbikes, and this isn't the best photo of them, but it at least gets the idea across. Basically, Shiz, Rhoad, and myself all bought these really shady quality gas-powered pocketbikes and joined forces with Hooman who owned his own electric powered one and terrorized all of Dunwoody for a number of months during the summer of 2005. The most memorable of these nights was probably the time that Hooman, Charlie, and myself were riding around the Wal Mart/Rendezvous parking lot causing havoc, and decided to take a quick break behind Wal Mart for Hooman to urinate. Charlie and I spotted a couple of men walking our way and quickly realized that they were Dekalb County cops, and for some reason we decided that hopping on the bikes and running was the best idea. We took off like mad and made it to my complex, but it was one of the more funny and frightening rides of my life.

I know I have way more somewhere, I'll have to look around a bit more.

This thread makes me think that the book idea we discussed a few months ago would be completely awesome too.

Race Of The Century
55 combined horsepower. Blazing speed. Screeching tires. Less than par launches. WalMart allie. Insanity.

We had 3 contenders, all in extremely high performance cars:

Andy in the hachi (sorry for the crappy pic, i was too far away and didn't even get a chance to take any others)
Image

Cody in the 94 MX-3

and last, Chris in the 83 Prelude in full race mode

This is the shit that really started it all, imho.

Image
If you know who's car that is ^^... you're OG.

There weren't any drift teams in GA back then that we knew of. We decided to start a drift team... and make shirts to sell. The original goal was to sell enough shirts that we could race all over the country... and sell more shirts all over everywhere, and do basically what Pac-Rim did. While things didn't work out quite like that... fate still managed to deal an amazing hand.

FD ATL 2004. Tarzan Yamada did a demo, and got out of the car, and threw his shirt into the crowd. In one of the fastest reflex moments I think I've had... I grabbed one of our shirts, and threw it to him. He put it on. BAM. History made.

Image

All of a sudden... this maniac that I'd been watching for years in Option videos was wearing our shit. I felt like it legitimized it. This was totally surreal to me... and perhaps a sign of things to come.

It was his birthday... so Akinori Utsumi threw a cake in Yamadas's face.
Image
Image

Uchi later put one on the second I gave him one... and Vogue'd it up.
Image

That day changed the face of American drifting... and DriftMechaniks. That day I decided that I wanted to be a professional drifter... and would do everything I could to make it happen. I guess I really did it.

Most of us who still frequent this forum were into drifting long before FD ATL in '04... but seeing professional drifting in the flesh sent us all overboard with the bug bit in fulllll swing.

That day, Charlie also surprised us with THIS:
Image

Surprising people with new cars is TOTALLY fucking radical. I will forever cherish that day. It marks the FOERST chapter to me, although the book definitely has a long preface to it...
