Piggyback? Or standalone?

Post by AE111 »

So what's everyone running as far as engine management goes? Piggybacks? Or standalones?

Here in Indonesia I'm looking at three options that are in the USD $150-$300 range for my supercharger project, any clear winners here or not:

[1] Dastek Type A with Turbo Module;
[2] HKS F-Con Mini;
[3] Apex'i SAFC 2 (not sure if this has a clamp voltage feature or not);

Help an Asian brudda out, guys...

You got soldering skills? Have you looked into the Megasquirt?

Foo is using a megasquirt I think.

the F-con isn't adjustably enough to make it useful.

you have a mother board, and smaller boards are daughter boards.

Dastek Q has 5 programmable 24-point maps, second-hand price is around $200 (not including install or tuning). Dastek A is even cheaper, but has only one 16-point map, second-hand price about $120-$150 (still doesn't include install or tuning). Unfortunately Dastek Unichips have no visible metering functions like the SAFC.

I like my Megasquirt, don't know if it's a big possibility in Indonesia but it's got more online support than you could ever want to read. Super simple to put together, and in the process you get to know the ins and outs of your car's brains. It can control an absurd amount of functions and is upgradeable as you please. It takes a good bit of effort but you can prep everything before hand and make it a simple process if you want, or be crazy like I was and re-do everything at the same time (much more of a crap shoot on getting it right FOERST try). Look into it, dunno what shipping is like/if there is any kind of distributorship in your neck of the woods.

Oh another plus is tuning software is open-source and there's enough literature for any old dummy to teach themselves the basics to get the car running decently (power can be gotten with practice and/or an experienced tuner).

Is it hard to convert an EFI car to Megasquirt? And it is possible to control some advanced stuff like turbos along with fuel/spark, right?

It's designed for any and all fuel-injected applications and it can run stuff all the way to like flat-shift if you set the hardware/software up for it. It's a pretty open platform for doing whatever you want.

MS is the way to go. Really the next closest thing in that price bracket is some ECU out of Australia. It's not adaptronic/motec/haltech/mocritech, it's something else. Crap what was it...
