Fort Mountain 2-day hike, March 13&14th

Post by jsquared »

Im going to be going on an overnight hike to Fort Mountain next month, March 13th and 14th. Pretty standard trip. If anyone is interested in going let me know and we can see what happens. Right now its just me and a friend, would rather keep it small (less than 5 people tops).

I added a map with the trails I want to take outlined (looks kinda like the UK, huh? :) ). Im not sure exactly where the trail head is located, but I think its pretty close to point 7 on the map.

The plan for Day One is to take the trail clockwise, starting somewhere on the east side at the trailhead and looping below the lake, then camping at the site in pink on Saturday night. That should be about halfway if we add the Lake Loop trail into day 1. Its only about an extra mile around the lake but I have read there are some good swimming spots, and theres a really awesome river cascade at point 5 on the map so I definitely want to take that side trail too. That makes day 1 like 6 miles or so.

Day two would be from the pink campsite to the Mountain Loop at the top where the old fort and 1930's fire tower are located (point 2 on the map). Thats about another 5-6 miles for day two and some awesome scenery before heading down to the parking lot and home.

The park entrance is at point 8 on the map, you can see the turnout from the road here:

Cool cool sounds good. The only thing Im iffy about (at least from what Ive read/seen) is that the entire area is like a big resort. Not too outdoorsy when you are constantly passing fat people and kids on the trail and fighting for views with mountain-top restaurants. You also have to register to camp and I hear it can get filled up sometimes.

I'll keep you posted on dates..I know I'm also busy the Friday before (the 5th I think), and still waiting to see if I definitely have plans for the 13th-14th. I definitely wanna go sometime soon though, assuming not too many of the kids that were rambling about it on 240atl show up, haha :).

Haha yeah I got over that real quick, all I wanted was some damn info. I dont know how to say "Youre not invited" any nicer than I did, youd think people would take the hint.

But yeah keep me posted, i picked that weekend because I turn 30 on the 16th so I thought itd be a nice way to roll out the 20's :)

As much as my body is telling me no after ingesting nothing but alcohol for 8 days, I think this hike is still a go. Might just be me going so I hope its not too cold.
