Thanks, me too. Ford quoted me $7,900 to $10,000 before labor to fix it. That's not happening. I have to figure out what to do with it in the mean time. Thankfully, Ford said I can keep it there for a few days free of charge. Here are my options on what to do with it while I'm pursuing legal action against the seller.
A. Get it towed and parked in my driveway where nobody can see it has no plate?
B. He signed the title but I didn't, so call a junk yard and junk it?
C. Put it in my name and pay the sales tax on it $$$$ then let it sit?
D. Option C. then junk it?
E. Rent a parking spot at a storage place and get it towed there to sit?
F. Leave it in the ghetto.
I really don't want to put the thing in my name, but I don't want to risk it getting a ticket either. Any ticket(s) would be sent to him since it's still in his name, but you get what I'm saying. I don't wanna spend money registering/insuring it or storing it. I know the lawyer(s) will advise me on what to do. I'm just curio what ya'll would do.

did you test drive this thing? because it dying 6 miles away seems like something would pop up before hand.

You should do whatever it takes to get it running long enough to drive it into the front of the motherfucker's house.

I'd have it towed back to the original owners place. return the title. eat the $300 deposit and move on with your life. not worth a bunch of headaches. The dude wont scoff at the free $300.

Leave it at Ford and have them charge storage and eventually put a lien on it!
Any fees would be against the owner of the vehicle. He's the last registered owner.
At this point I'm gonna say, do NOT put it in your name. It'll protect you more from any liability related to whatever happens with the vehicle if it is not in your name.
I know you're in a bit of money on it but I'd be tempted to just walk away from it. You bought a used car from an individual as-is and there isn't much recourse. Well, successful recourse for you anyway.
Dunno how much weight this 'contract' you made with him for the down and the rest later on will carry if he takes you to court. As there are a few unknowns I suggest you talk to a lawyer to make sure.

oh I thought I read the buyers agreement said he had paid $300 down with $3800 due that week. if its paid in full I agree get a lawyer involved asap. I know some states have lemon laws but who knows if that applies to private sales.

there are laws on the book, atleast in missouri, about not selling a car that wont pass inspection as a used vehicle. that might help ya rob. also helps that there is no as-is on title or anything. just talk to a lawyer and if shit cant be done, we revert to charlies plan of attack

It sounds like he knew it was bad before he sold it.. or had an idea.
I'd eat the $300 bucks, drop the shit off in front of his house on the street and be glad you are only out $500 bucks instead of $5000-10k.

Yeah, I test drove it. It drove great.
The $300 was a down payment for him to hold it for me and remove it from CL. I paid the remaining $3200 ($3500 total) right before I drove it away.

The engine is completely seized. Therefore, I can't get it running long enough to drive anywhere.

It doesn't look good on me in court to just let it sit and rack up tickets/charges. Even if it's still in his name, I'd be liable for the charges because it's in my possession.
I'm not putting it in my name. I'm going to rent a parking spot at a storage facility and have it towed there. Hopefully, he'll have to pay for that if I win the case.
Just walk away?! I'd hope most people wouldn't walk away from being screwed out of $3500 and then having to deal with an immobile vehicle.
I talked to a lawyer at the legal office on base today. He said that I have enough of a case to move on to talking to a civilian lawyer. That's the next step. If the civilian lawyer agrees he'll probably send an official letter requesting he return the money and take back the truck by a certain date or it'll move to small claims court.

not trying to sound like a dick but if you test drove it and it was awesome and 6 miles later it exploded you aren't very good with trucks or something i've worked with these motors before and they don't just lock up "all of the sudden"

It's cool. I heard the 7.3L's are good motors. I test drove it down his narrow backroad. I only got it up to maybe 35 mph tops. I would've liked to have test drove it more/faster/harder but I'm inexperienced with driving trucks, it wasn't mine, and the highway was a good ways away. I've never owned a truck in my life, but after I bought it I was driving it normally. I didn't take it over 45-55 mph and wasn't racing the engine unless you count accelerating to get up to/back up to the speed limit.
