My ex-GF had something similar on her laptop, had to reinstall Windows to get rid of it. The program was blocking any AV executable from running, even in safe mode and with renamed .exe's. At that point I figured it wasnt worth it and reinstalled. Pretty sure she got it from surfing porn with IE6.

As far as programs go, Spybot S&D, AdAware, and AVG are on all my machines. I run AVG all the time and sweep with the other two.

yeah I found it, that crap is hella annoying though, I switched back to AVG, just runs smoother and hogs less resources.

The single biggest thing you can do to not get malware is to not run Windows. Second biggest is to not run Internet Explorer.

I have internet explorer removed though add and remove programs so yea its still there but I dont use it.

I've used Lavasoft's Adaware for years now, They have a free edition which is amazing, it's for spyware. I use AVG Free for Antivirus. I have used Adaware to get rid of that program for other people though.
