Anyone have pics of the rear part of the cage for 2010 legal FD cars? We need some help....

Did the rules for the rear change? I didnt notice anything specifically.

Here's Matt P's rear bars, looks like he had to widen the opening to the trunk in order to keep the bars straight and at a good angle and still be at the right spot on the main hoop:

my cage will pass fd tech but it is a little over kill. will try to find a few snaps of the rear section.


the main this at the diag bar from drivers head to floor is one piece. the harness bar is 2 piece. the the down bars from the main hoop to the rear must be straight and connect at the base plate.

The only thing lacking might be test holes to assure tubing thickness, but that's easily done with a drill whenever it's actually necessary.

Dave's rear supports aren't legal. they have to meet the chassis at the base.

Is that new per this past year? I don't remember seeing anything about that in last year's rule book.

Haha can't be having something I made not be legal, that would be just silly. I think I have enough scrap left-over to work that out, if not I'll be buying some to re-do the cage in my S13 so I'll snag some extra to re-do that.

I would love to have you do a front crash bar and some other support bracing as well.

Perfect, I was starting to get worried I wasn't going to get to do any fab work this summer and was going to have to get a normal job... PM me what you're interested in so I can start figuring it all out. Also if you're up for it we could gusset the thing while I'm working on it to make it truly legal.

previously you were also allowed to terminate the rear downbars into a (for lack of terminology right now) strut tower brace type deal, as per several w2w sanctioning bodies.

Nope... there used to be a lot of freedom in the rear braces. I dont' have the FD rulebook for this year handy but I HIGHLY SUGGEST READING IT WITH YOUR OWN EYES BEFORE MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR CAGE. The FD rulebook originally came from the SCCA Pro Racing rules. Neither the FD '05 book (what I had on hand), nor the current 2010 SCCA Pro Racing book mention attaching to the bottom of the towers.

6. Bracing:

The main roll hoop shall have two braces extending to the rear attaching
to the frame or chassis. Braces shall be attached as near as possible to
the top of the main hoop not more than six (6) inches below the top and at
an included angle of at least thirty (30) degrees. On cars where the rear
window/bulkhead prohibits the installation of rear braces (e.g., Honda del
Sol), the main hoop shall be attached to the body by plates welded to the
cage and bolted to the stock shoulder harness mounting points.

J.8.3.1.1: Closed cars with full cockpit-width main hoops must have two (2) braces extending to the rear, and attaching to the frame, or chassis. Braces must be attached as near as possible to the top of the main hoop (not more than 6” below the top), and at an included angle of at least 30-degrees. Main hoop rear bracing shall not extend rearward past the shock towers.
J.8.3.1.2: Open cars must have two (2) braces extending forward from the main hoop, and attaching to the frame, monocoque, or front hoop. This bracing may be supplemented by rear bracing. Forward and rear bracing must be attached as near as possible to the top of the main hoop (not more than 6” below the top), and at an included angle of at least 30 degrees. This bracing must protect the driver’s shoulders and torso.

I found v1 of the 2010 FD book that came out in October.

7.4.8 Rear Hoop Supports:

included angle of at least thirty (30) degrees. No bends are allowed on rear

BTW, do not overdue your cage and extend it past the shock towers.
