Farkin turbos
I took off my turbo inlet pipe so I could get to the power steering hose and tighten it. While it was off I figured I'd check the play on the turbo... fffffffffffffffffuck, almost a millimeter thrust play and the wheel is slightly chewed up. Gotta rebuild it now.
Re: Farkin turbos
Noooo!
I know nothing of turbos to be of any halp.

Yeah, cuz nothing says "cheap fix" like picking turbo vanes out from between your valves' teeth.

Re: Farkin turbos
Maybe the turbo was always like this, and that's what makes this car run so awesome?

Re: Farkin turbos
So before you felt that it was "bad", in your mind it was fine, right?
Just put it back in and rock it until you are killing mosquitos within 100' of your tailpipe. The oil seals will fail long before you ingest impeller fins into the engine. Trust me - I'm a professional

Knowing Tony...
The turbo will probably ingest the engine.. spit it out of the exhaust and then the car will stall.

Re: Farkin turbos
Long story short, the turbo was heavily damaged, wheels salvageable. Had it rebuilt, drove it 120 miles to TGP, ripped on the track for 150 miles and then drove it home. YAY!
It was actually 3 mm of play once I got both hands on it. Turbine wore through the heat shield, thrust collar worn to a knife edge and you can see the chips that started breaking off of it, and the thrust washer worn about 3mm deep. Dave was amazed it wasn't smoking, there was only slight evidence of oil in the turbine. The play was fine when I checked it 4-5 months ago.
Normal:
Mine:
Oops... forgot the deets
S14 KA24DE, stock plenum/manifold, head, crank, rods, cams/valvetrain.
Bored 20 over for CP 9:1 forged pistons
ARP head studs and Cometic head gasket
Fidanza lightened flywheel
T3/T04e: stage 3 turbine in .63 AR housing, 60trim wheel in .60AR compressor
custom "ram horn style" manifold (1 of 5 made)
3" down pipe and exhaust, wastegate dump
JWT ECU with Z32 MAFS and 740cc injectors, fine tuned with AFC Neo
Modified CX Racing intercooler kit
Blow-through MAFS setup
WELL PROGRAMMED BOOST CONTROLLER
The turbo is a tad bigger than optimum for my boost level ~17psi.
I can't stress how much a well programmed boost controller can transform a car. They are very techy devices and you have to know how to play with them to get quick spool. You can have two totally different settings that both yield 17psi max, but one might give you only 5psi at 3500 rpm while another would already be at 10.
