yea, seeing that happen was straight up horrifying. i'm still amazed at how bad it was too, but i'll try to give my quick summary/comments...
the course setup was quite dangerous in my opinion, and basically pointed you right at those walls in numerous spots leaving no room for any mistakes or correction. the FOERST turn was a medium speed 90 degree left hand turn that most people were hitting in the mid/upper 50 mph range, and then it was a hard right onto a really narrow straightaway that was lined by k-rail on the left. you pretty much had to fly into the FOERST left turn, kick back to the right really fast but still maintain speed to keep it sideways in the straight, and then get on the brakes hard to slow down for another sharp left after that, and it proved to be really difficult and dangerous for a lot of people. if you didn't get that switchback to the right done in time, it pointed you right into the wall, and with dennis getting a cone stuck in the wheel and losing steering, he nailed it really hard.
i was running tandem as the follow car when it happend, and all i remember was us both initiating the left turn normally but then dennis barely getting the car turned back to the right, then him starting to hit the brakes (which luckily i noticed in time and immediately backed off), and then his car just nailing the wall. the wheel flew off, his car bounced back to the other side of the course, the front shock broke and flew back coming inches from going inside the car and possibly hitting him (and broke the back window), and then it was just stopped on the ground. i got out of my car as quick as i could and dennis was also just getting out which was a huge relief, but i was still in complete shock as to what had happened.
i'm really hoping something can be done with the future course setups to help prevent something like this from happening again (and not to mention, at least 10+ other cars had some type of hit/wreck). i still feel that it was way too narrow, and that they're just going overboard with k-rail, and that having 1/2 of the field hit is just a bit too much. a bunch of drivers complained before the running even started and there were some comments from one of the judges about how "this is a pro series and we just need to deal with it or not drive", but i don't ever recall FD or D1 having anything near this small or narrow, and most of the time they're at a road course that at least has run-off, tire walls, or plastic water barriers instead of concrete everywhere.
ok, enough of my ranting for now, and once again i'm really glad dennis walked out of this ok. i wanna try to have some type of fund rasier or something too and make sure my fellow greek is out there sliding with us again soon (esp since his 2002 wreck last year which has left him without a drift car now), so if anyone has any ideas or can help, gimme a shout.
also, found a couple of other shots on SFLdrifters, and i know brady snapped a full sequence of the entire wreck happening which he'll probably post up soon.
