I do know that there's no reason he should have gone through those bearings. That's just insane. There's also no reason they should cost $110. I guess everything for BMW is just more...

I looked into the possibility... but if I did the M3 diff, I'd have to do the entire backend - rumored down to the rear quarter panels. At the end of the day, the Kaaz will work better for my intended use... so it's all good.

You're right, though... there's no reason he should have destroyed that many (or any in the FOERST place) bearings. You're also right that everything for BMW's costs more. I guess that bearing is a special-order item that isn't available to the public which is why it costs so much. It also comes with the race - there's no other way to get the new bearing.

on a more sympathetic note, i feel bad about your run in with that shop, even tho i had nothing to do with it..

still, i think that is just incompetence, looks like he used a screwdriver and hammer to press it on.................retard.

Time to vent...

I just got off the phone with Dan from Diffsonline. I said his worries were well-founded... sure enough, the shop dented and took chunks out of the pinion gear, and ground the inside of the case down. He said he's no structural engineer... but he doesn't feel comfortable working with that carrier case. He said it would be very noisy to say the least.

Luckily he has a 3.46 diff on hand with 10K on it that he can use instead. This will cost me $500 more.

Once more... and the real kicker - he advised me that he should really open up the Kaaz carrrier and inspect it. He said that there were bolts removed from the unit, and it looked like they opened it up. That's an extra hour of labor... provided they didn't fuck anything up. I'm still looking at another $500 in labor to assemble it.

I'm looking at $1200 shipped... not to mention the $227 for the new carrier bearings, $1300 for the Kaaz, $110 for the finned diff cover, $20 for the axle seals, $10 for the gasket, and a prolonged four months of aggravated progress with this project. Grand total: $2867 and it's not even done yet.

Now I have the wonderful task of approaching the old shop for reimbursement on the old carrier case - or the purchase of a new case for $500. Realistically, this means it's time to take them to court.
