What are the differences between RX7s ?

Post by charlie »

I was on 75 today and saw an FC and an FD playing around (I was in a work truck so I couldn't play along:() and I was just curious as to the differences between them. I've always loved both body styles, but I think I'm partial to the FD, but only as far as looks goes. I'm curious because I used to have a FOERST gen DSM and from what I've read they fucked up the recipe on the second gen's. The 2G's had smaller turbos (T25 instead of a 14b), really shitty BOVs, and are apparently prone to crankwalk. I've even heard of people doing 1G engine swaps to 2Gs. Are there similar issues with the Mazdas or are they pretty much similar mechanically?

And I guess, since we're on topic, what did they change with the RX-8?

I know there are tons of rotary experts on the forum, so I'm sure this will be answered quickly. Of course I could look it up, but I'd rather just find out from people who know.

Thanks!

FC Single Turbo
FD Twin Turbo.

But most people like to do Single on the FD to lower the heat under the hood which is the number mods to do to a FD. Heat is the worst enemy to the FD which for the other cars it is too, but this is much worse. I still want to get one, but te FC is bad ass. To the Rx7 downfall is the Apex Seals, do to being worn out quicker, thats why they need to be rebuilt every 70-100k miles.

Rx8 they took out the turbos (bastards) and they made the seals much stronger, but we'll see once they hit the 70-100k range haha. By then the warienty is gone by then.

people don't do the single turbo swap on the FD's for less heat, they do it for less vacuum mess. the FD's have one hell of a rats nest of vacuum lines and when you go single turbo with em you eliminate all of it. it cleans the engine bay a ton and also let the power potention soar!

as far as i'm aware, there is no FA.

i've seen lots of rotary engines (in FB's and FC's) go over 200,000miles before a rebuild... but they all were stock. no one ever keeps the FD's stock long enough to get that kinda milage. lol...... in stock form the rotary engine is quite reliable. but when you start modding it, thats when your reliability drops. especially if you miss a crutial mod (like me) and then the motor goes pop.

the carbon apex seals they are great for NA engines. They are very bittle and not good for Turbos. Ceramic is a little better, but lot of guys that are running 400-600hp are on stock seals.

Tunning is the key on the Rotary, they are very bitchy when they don't get enough Fuel, air and water haha.

FA never existed, SA then FB, FC, and FD and by this time everyone assumed the one before FB, FC, & FD had to be FA...

FC came in NA (13b) and single turbo versions [13BT (Turbo II)], also convertible (n/a only in US). All FD's are are twin sequential turbo's, 13B-REW.
