Even if the only bar that's anywhere near my head is the main hoop WELL BEHIND me? This is what I was looking at doing:

quazar311 wrote:yeah.. don't be an idiot and put a cage in your DD. even with rollbar padding.. that rollbar padding is made to absorb impacts with a helmet on your head.

i had a friend that died because of a cage in his DD... granted he was streetracing.. but when he crashed, the cage did nothing to save his life.. it killed him.

i still have the image in my mind of him laying in his casket.. after they rebuilt his forehead for viewing.

don't be a retard.

I guess I shouldn't say cage...cause it's not really a cage as much as it is a roll bar with door bars. Why is it any more dangerous than driving without it? There's nothing extra for me to hit my head on assuming I'm properly wearing a seatbelt!

You guys are just saying "dumb, stupid, idiot", and not giving any reasoning why this particular setup is any more dangerous than stock. I get in a wreck, my head is still going into glass instead of a bar.

I completely agree that a full cage is completely moronic in a street car, because, if you get in a wreck, it's going to pop your head like a rotten pumpkin. That's not my argument.

unless you plan on using a race seat, 5 or 6 point harness and wear a helmet all the time, you should not cage your car. the tubing is stronger than your body, as was stated in past posts.

btw, harnesses are not legal on public streets. race seats don't have "give" to them like stock seats, and helmets while driving a car on the street is a nono too.

it's in your best interest to build up a "race car" and have a daily driver.

if you can't understand any of the plain english in this post and the many other posts in this thread, you need to go back to find some common sense because a 2500 pound car is a killing projectile that you THINK you have control over.

Why is wearing a helmet driving on the street a "nono"?

most states have laws that prohibit you from wearing anything on your head while driving that seriously constrains your range of vision, with cars having blind spots already it's not a very smart thing to do, and in most states it is illegal to drive with both ears covered, that rules out almost all helmets that are truly protective.

I got pulled over because of my yellow headlights and the cop asked me to take my helmet off. When I did, I asked him if it was illegal, and he said "Hell no. I just figured you were safety-conscious...Have you SEEN the way people drive in this town?"

Completely regardless of whether helmets are legal, my fundamental question hasn't been answered yet though. Essentially, that roll bar is no different than the rollbar on like a convertible PT Cruiser or Mustang, or even the roll bars I see on a lot of guys with Miatas that do SCCA Autocrosses in their daily drivers. The only real difference is that you have to add door bars. If I'm doing something wrong enough to hit my head on a door bar...I'm dead anyway. What extra danger does THAT particular roll bar contribute?

fucking a squirrel? but seriously, i know what you're doing. it's not the simplest of explainations. however the door panels will need modification. that's what kitty hair is for.

Wouldn't that make thick-framed sunglasses illegal as well? Mine are about an inch think on the sides, so I can't see shit much like a helmet.
Im not disagreeing with you btw.

I understand all that Peanut.

What I don't understand, is how that roll bar with door bars is going to kill me in a wreck...

I dunno about you guys, but I have full peripheral vision with my helmet. And I have no problems with being able to turn my head to see in my blind spots.

it won't.

and the states that outlaw helmets in the vehicle are insane. d.o.t. approved motorcycle helmets are designed NOT to impair perepherial vision, therefore causing no blind spot. just remember that in abalambala we can pretty much do whatever we fucking want to our cars and it'll still be legal... :D

what you are wanting to do is not a cage, it is for drag racing. so i see no point and you doing anything other than a rear 4 point. i have never seen a helmet with for side vision. but if you think y ou have it they go ahead and think yo do. also when you are in a race seat with a harness on show me how you can see your blind spots.

yee haw.

anyways.. i might have come off mean.. but it's only because i've seen what happened.

i remembered when i used to drive the DG drift-car around with a cage on the street.. i was always scared. very nervous.

my GTI has a 4 point rollbar in it.. it has no extensions beyond the back of my front seats. before i tore the car down for the swap.. i had a set of TSW Sabelts in it to prevent myself from moving beyond the constraints of my drivers seat and allow me to hit the rollbar in the event of a mishap.

if you're going to go with a rollbar.. might as well just get a 4 pt instead of a 6 pt. the 6 pt. does not provide much extra protection.. in fact.. in the event of a side impact.. you'll probably end up with a broken hip/leg/ribs.

ONLY do a rollbar with the addition of 4 pt. harnesses.
