Help JM decide on suspension

Post by Prince Nismo »

ok guys, i need to know a few differences other than price...
i'm down with the whole suspension thing but i don't know all that much about it...as far as dialing in the rates and dampers and all that mess....just need something that i can have fun and learn with...

whats the diff btw Tein SS, Basics, HE, Flex... don't think i'm ready for the SS and i guess my real question is whats the diff btw the HE, flex and Basix? Thanks >jm

i think its the Tein HE's that are a drift specific suspention set up. those are what i'll end up with once i get to that stage of my car. if you aren't really hardcore into getting your stuff set up then look into the Tokiko Illumina struts. i've got them, they're 5 way adjustable and perform very well. if you combine those with a good spring you'll be set for a good while.

I am trying to decided if I want to go with the Flexs or the HE's. The flex's come with pillow mounts and camber plates. The HE's don't but they are specialy designed with drifting in mind though. I guess it depends more on how you drive your car.

yea, you are right for that. nobody just got the flex's on her STI and loves them (although that is a completely different comparison).
one other guy on here (xonn) has the flex's on his S14 though and he said they are amazing, so i'm kinda leaning towards picking those up in a month or 2 for mine.

Hmmmmm... well i don't know a lot about tein sus but i am a lisenced JIC dealer. but with any suspension you have to know what you want out of it. do you want driftability, driveability, or both. lemme know if you are interested. later

i probably cant give a really good opinion here, other than my own. I have the tein flex system and *love* it. It rides and handles great-- but every car is different obviously.

i got love for jic... i need to learn the car FOERST since i have never driven it yet... so i was kinda thinking the basix but i'm cool with JIC 2.... i don't think i need the FLT-A2's... i don't really know the diff btw all the JIC's anyways... i need something with realy good handling and able to take some tight turns.... lets just say i enjoy rush hour on hilton head more than 99.9% of the people here... i need something that isn't going to be over kill but is going to able to handle some good mountain running when i get ready to go there.... am i being 2 vague? sorry if i am... my last car had springs and that was about it....well it was a spec so...STB... but thats about it... i need something good for sliding but not all out drifting all the time... thats why i am kinda leaning toward nobody's Flex's even though it's a completely diff car... it kinda sounds like what i want.... alot better handling and good balance of ride comfortablity and enough stiffness to keep me in my seat on turns....

Other than their color, compatibility with the EDFC, spring rates and a teflon coating to prevent rust, there isn't a world of difference between the HE and Flex. The Flex is considered to be Tein's newer generation coilover. Both designs come with pillow ball mounts on all 4 corners and camber plates for the front coilovers. If you car is used primarily for street driving with track use occasionally, I'd say go with the Flex series. They're phenomenal overall and if you run the struts with the valving biased more towards the stiffer side(12 in the rear; 10 in front for my setup), you'll have no trouble getting the rear end to step out. With them set to their stiffest setting, they become borderline *too harsh* for street driving. The HEs are going to be much stiffer than the Flex even on their softest setting. If you're willing to wait until next weekend to make your decision, then I'd be willing to take you for a ride in my 240 to see if the feel is what you're after.

As far as Tein is concerned the levels of coilover are Basic, SS and Flex. Flex is the more advanced and costly of the set. Flex gives you the most for the money. In all seriousness the Basic is the most efficient. You can only adjust ride height but you still have coilovers and there aren't that many people that adjust settings after the initial dial-in. Let's keep it gangsta folks. Spend 8bills on the Basic and the other 8 you would spend on the Flex system on an Uzi or something. Drive-by for life

There aren't many people that adjust the dial in settings after the initial one? I have adjusted mine a few times and will continue to do so. It is actually quite useful! And I only end up paying an extra 600 bucks for that feauture, not 800:) I like having all the extra adjustment and think that it's very worthwhile for the money.

Didn't you say you were going to get the flex's anyways?:P
